Your values are what guide your behaviour – whether you are conscious of them or not!
It’s important to become aware of what your values are, as it then allows you to be guided when needing to make key decisions in your life. They also create greater self-awareness and through increased self-awareness, you can then exercise better self-regulation.
What does that mean? It means you can make better choices!
As an organisation, it’s vital that you identify what your core values might be. In doing so, you can then use them to attract and hire the right fit for your team. It also allows you to foster and create the culture you want within your business.
Values should be alive in your team and be self-evident through the behaviour you witness day-to-day. The true test of your values is when an outsider to your organisation can tell what they are without reading your posters on the wall or your website.
Values are how people behave when nobody is watching!
Here’s my core values…
Leave the world better than you found it!
It is my responsibility to do my bit towards making the next person’s experience a positive one. I believe it’s important to pay it forward.
Do the right thing, even when nobody is watching
I do not expect plaudits or thanks for what I do (although these are nice). My life is defined by how I live up to my own high standards; nobody else’s.
Live in the moment and be present
The present is all we have and the only thing I can control. Sharing time with others and being present with them is the greatest gift I can give another.
Do the hard yards today for an easier tomorrow
I believe that there is no point putting things off or shying away from effort. Nothing worth having in life comes easy. I roll my sleeves up and get on with it; even when all I want to do is take the easy life!
Walk my talk and honour my word
Integrity means nothing until I deliver on my promises. I try. I may not be perfect, but I know what it means to deliver on a promise. Others may not reciprocate – that’s their problem, not mine.
Explore the fun in everything I do
Life is short and should be fun. Yes life is hard and can be tough on us. There is always time to have fun and bring a smile to people’s faces. Fun with a serious intent!
